Featuring songs by Brian Lasser, William Bolcom, John Bucchino, Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, Charles Strouse, Maury Yeston, and the goth-rock band Evanescence, SURVIVING LOVE is the story of an isolated gay youth who escapes from his small Midwestern town to the Big City and finds love during the onset of the AIDS epidemic. As we approach the 40th Anniversary of the discovery of this disease that continues to ravage the world, SURVIVING LOVE is an important part of the cultural conversation.
Author and performer Robert Chionis took episodes from the lives of people he knew personally, as well as his own personal survivor’s tale, using theatre and cabaret songs to create a unique “AIDS Quilt” for his friends. On this evening in Bar&Co, he is trying out the newly reworked narrative, before bringing it to a festival in the US.
